It is amazing to think back to being a Senior in school, which by the way...I don't think it was that long ago. Where I grew up, there was a studio, that I don't even remember the name, that came to our school to do a drape or tux picture and then there was only one other studio in a neighboring town (actually a different state) that provided "Cool Senior Portraits". I remember there was no consultation, I was told to bring up to two different outfits and there were just 2 or three sets within the studio. I think the session was 1 hour long and I remember thinking it was set up like an amusement ride waiting line...I went from room to room and stood for a few shots and then moved onto the next. Wallets were big so I remember my main goal was to get as many wallets as I could, to hand to my friends and my Mom got the "huge" 8x10. LOL.
Wow, times have really changed for Senior Portraits! As a photographer I really understand the value of making these sessions unique. It is more than just bringing your cheerleading uniform or saxophone to the studio. This is your last set of portraits as you enter adulthood probably until you get married and have a family. These are pivotal in defining who you are at that time and who you want to be going forth. Students should be able to express this moment in their portraits and be able to rely on their photographer to create the best set up possible. I approach Senior portrait session consultation as a "Listening Sessions". During that consultation, I spend much of my time simply listening to the client: likes and dislikes, what they are "in to", what is their favorite style of music, do they play sports or are they involved in any extra curricular activites, do they have a "style", where are they going to school, what do they want to be...and of course I also listen to the parents as to what they envision for this session. Based upon these details, I make recommendations for attire, location, style, etc... and the session designing begins.
Senior Portrait Sessions are one of my most fun sessions. Why...because every single one is different. Whether the session is in the studio, in the mud, on the beach, in a forest, in a graveyard, in a church, or in the middle of a street they are always fresh and fun! And now the with the products...the sky is the limit. Maybe Mom wants a custom jewelry piece showcasing her favorite, or a beautiful canvas gallery wrap gracing the wall. What about an album showcasing the entire experience. I have seen the wallet orders minimize and the electronic reprint releases increase. Seniors are wanting the coolest custom graduation announcments. Everyone is going outside of the box and I love it! Senior Season is approaching and I am ready!
