Proposals are an experience like no other! Believe it or not, there is tons of planning that goes into this big event for the person proposing and even the photographer :) Everything has to be staged just right, timing coordinated, but of course keeping everything in the moment. John had contacted me weeks before the proposal and had everything planned beautifully. I set up a staged shoot and the rest is history....well you need to read their story below, because it is much better!!!!!
Katie and John are engaged! We could not be more excited. John decided to “pop” the question during Katie’s family vacation to Amelia Island, a very special place for the couple. Shortly after they began dating, John began joining the family on their annual beach vacation to Amelia. This was such a treat for this Yankee, born and bred in Pennsylvania! John planned ahead and booked a horseback riding excursion for the Big Day, remembering to include a wonderful photographer to photo-document the monumental moments. This was NOT Katie’s plan, however, for the day, and initially she was quite upset that she would not be enjoying Amelia Island Plantations’ Treetop Yoga—an event she had been looking forward to since booking the vacation. Needless to say, there was some quarreling right before the very happy moments! This, in retrospect, makes for a funny story, of course! Well, the couple was dropped off for their riding adventure, with Katie grabbing her father’s old, dirty baseball cap for some last minute sun protection (horseback riding was truly a surprise). Once on the horses, however, all was forgotten, and the couple walked along, enjoying the beautiful day, serene beach, and friendly horses. But, in a turn of events, John stopped midstride, and dismounted from his steed. Katie must admit, at this point, this romantic scenario was seeming a little fishy! He walked over and lifted Katie from her horse, as well. They, then, walked, hand-in-hand, in silence, for what seemed like a lifetime (to their “mark!”) John was sweating, even more than usual, in the warm summer sun! He made it though, and lowered (with some difficulty in his thick, horseback riding jeans) onto one knee. The ring came out, and he choked out a “Will you marry me?” in front of the horses, birds, and few onlookers whom had gathered for the sight. Well, of course, the answer was “of course!”, and the ring was put in its rightful place. After the pinnacle moment, Kellie Boston, of Boston Photography, who was in disguise until the question was asked and answered, ran over with congratulations. She then took masterful control and brilliant photos of one of the most important moments in our lives. Our beautiful photos will hang in our future home, and we will always remember the moment during which we made the decision to begin the rest of our lives! Thank you Kellie! We can’t wait for our next adventure!
Katie and John met each other almost 6 years ago through close friends, who themselves had just start dating. He was “his” friend, and she was ”hers,” and both John and Katie had traveled from Maryland and Georgia, respectively, to New York city to meet the other half of this new relationship. At an intimate dinner of 30 of some close friends, and many strangers, Katie and John found themselves seated across from each other. Both must admit they didn’t mind this arrangement, and felt immediate attraction. John will tell his close friends and family that Katie left quite the impression on him that night during their conversation. He was definitely left wanting to hear more! Katie remembers that she found him incredibly handsome by the candlelight. After a fun weekend together with friends, they parted ways back to Maryland and Georgia, determined to keep in touch. Within just a few days, they could be found talking on the phone to one another and emailing back and forth. Their first “date” was about 2 weeks after their first meeting, at a great concert on Halloween night, back at their origin--in New York city. The rest is history! The last 6 years have really shaped their relationship. John was Katie’s number one supporter during the completion of her medical school and residency training. She, literally, could not have done it without him. John attributes Katie for expanding his horizons, encouraging him to travel, and experiencing new things and people. Their number one goal, both individually and together, would be to make their world a better place with God’s direction. They are so excited about what comes next!
