Celebrating One Year with a Cake Smash -Boston Photography Amelia Island Photographer

First Birthdays are such an amazing celebration!  This little baby now has a personality!  They showcase what they like and what they do not like.  One year is a milestone in many other ways as well.  If your little one is not walking yet, no worries it typically occurs soon.  According to BabyCenter.com, most babies take their first steps before 12 months but the motor skill walking milestone is 18 months.  When I am photographing a one year session, I am looking not only to see how well the baby can smash the cake, but also focusing on what motor skill milestone they have reached and how can I showcase their strengths (crawling, laughing, standing, etc....).  We spend an hour with our little one year olds.  Typically, I capture at least 2-3 different backdrops or sets.  The first is to show their size, skills, favorite things and their entire family of course (family is included in all of our standard and baby bundle sessions).  If the family is interested in doing a birthday cake portion then we save that for last.  Families have an option of bringing in their own cake or I work very closely with a local baker (Nana Teresa's Bake Shop) to create something completely unique to the family.  These are always entertaining and completely "unpredictable"!  Some little ones love the cake, bite it, or even lay in it.  Others do not want to get their hands dirty and have a more "hands-off approach".  Either way, it always makes for some great portraits.
